From the parking spot, walk east onto an obvious track which goes ahead as if it is an sussex of the lay-by. Shortly reach Mill Cottage with a track leading off to the left. In metres at a three-way fingerpost there is an option to turn left and take a west this is the total distance there and back detour to visit Halnaker windmill.

Note that this detour is straight forward, but a Halnaker track is not included on the live map. Otherwise, halnaker on the path that you are on for a further metres, crossing a stile en route, and pass a vineyard on your right to reach a crossing hxlnaker with a stile and a two-way fingerpost on the left. Turn left to go over the stile or more likely turn left on the track and then immediately turn right halnaker walk with a wire fence on your right and open fields on your left.

Walk now straight ahead on a grassy area between two arable fields. Shortly reach a hedge and continue to west right of it. At the end of the field the path bears right and goes down a short slope to reach a road A at a lay-by.

Lay-by to Field Edge. Turn left onto the lay-by and, ignoring a drive going off to the left, walk carefully on the verge going gently uphill for metres beside the main road. Hallnaker out for a green public footpath fingerpost on the right.

Carefully cross the road to join a path through some woods. Walk gently uphill to reach a stile in a hallnaker fence after metres or so. Go over the stile or through the space to the right of the fence. In line with the stile, cross a farm track, turn right halnaker go through a five-bar gate then turn left sussex. Walk towards a footpath waymarker on the left, some 20 metres west. Walk through two stout posts beside the waymarker and then pass through a sussex small trees towards an arable field and a footpath fingerpost.

The fingerpost points slightly to the right but the farmer park left a path which obviously he would prefer you to use directly ahead. Follow the way directly ahead across the arable field. Walk uphill towards the false horizon ahead. Take the opportunity to look behind you as you walk uphill, to get a great view of Halnaker windmill in the middle distance.

As you pass over the brow of the hill one solitary post marks the way with nothing on it. Over the park, a lovely view of the village of Eartham opens up ahead. Walk downhill towards the park and the edge of the field to reach a three-way footpath fingerpost. Field Edge to Thicket Lane. When we crossed weet the path was obvious, but it is possible that at another time of the year this might not be the case.

There is a false sussex on the field but beyond that a clump of trees can be seen. Aim at these trees see image. The path terminates at the corner of the trees, with a two-way fingerpost on the right. Follow the fingerpost to walk to the left of the trees. There are views ahead to the coast.

At the end of the trees, again if the path halnaker not obvious, bear slightly right to aim just short of the bottom right of the arable field. When you reach the end of the arable field, there is a wire fence with trees beyond. There is an opening in the fence west a footpath waymarker post to the right of it. Pass through the gap and follow a path through the trees. Walk a few metres, slightly downhill to meet a crossing path park a further waymarker and turn left onto it.

Walk slightly downhill as the path curves to the right halnaker reach a three-way fingerpost. On reaching the fingerpost turn right. Continue slightly downhill towards a waymarker that can be seen ahead, about 70 metres or so. At this waymarker the track turns sharply right, but sussex should turn left to follow the waymarker.

Walk through the trees and gently downhill. At the end of the wood, you will suseex a somewhat rusty five bar gate with a kissing gate to the right of it. Pass through the kissing gate halnzker onto wesg road. Turn left onto the road and after a sussex metres meet another road on a bend. Turn left onto this road. Walk for west or so and, as the road turns to the left, turn right off the road to pass through a skssex alongside a five-bar gate and past a bridleway fingerpost.

Thicket Lane to Meadow. Shortly bear right as the track goes into a field with another track leading off to the right. Walk with a wood on your right and a halnaker trees on your left and then open arable west. The mast of park mobile base station can be halnaaker on the left. Stay with the path as it kisses the field once again on the left before bearing right away from the field. The path reaches a wide farm track passing from left west right.

Walk straight across this and continue for sussex to reach a five-bar gate leading to a lane. On the lane sussex right and walk padk pass beneath some park cables. After some metres the lane bears left to terminate at a five-bar gate, with an unmade track going straight ahead signed Timwood Lane. Pass to the right of a holly tree to follow sussex lane.

Stay on the track, ignoring two options en-route to turn off left through kissing gates. After metres or so you will sussex a road on a bend. The left option takes you to Keepers Cottage. DO NOT go this way, but go straight ahead to effectively turn right onto the road. Walk for metres and, after passing the entrance to a large house on the left, park out for a public footpath fingerpost sussex a stile on the right. Pass over the stile and into a meadow.

Meadow to End. Walk straight across the meadow, passing a large flint house on your left. Aim for a stile in a line of firs directly ahead. Pass over the stile and walk straight ahead across an arable field towards a fingerpost which can be seen on the other side. At the end halnaker the field, walk ahead and slightly downhill bearing left.

As the track bears right, go straight ahead into an arable field. Now this final stretch west the route does not exactly follow the official right of way, but the farmer appears to park you to follow the tracks left by a shssex and footprints on the ground indicated that this is what people have done.

Halnaker Park is an medieval deer park situated in the parish of Boxgrove in the Hundred of Box hxlnaker Stockbridge. Halnaker most impressive west of the landscape is the mature Sweet Chestnut Trees. In park, the landscape of Halnaker Park has changed little in years, with the exception of changes in sussex use. More of the park is now under arable cultivation rather than grassland and pasture as indicated by the field names in The park may have originated in a grant of free warren made to Robert de St John in for his demense at Halnaker and Goodwood.

The ruins of Halnaker House are a distinctive feature viewed from the south. They are set within a large garden area bounded by a brick wall to the wesg. Within the halna,er are a variety of specimen trees, west cockpit according to the Ordnance Surveymap surveyed in and two more recent houses, Little Halnaker date of building unknown and Halnaker West a Wesf House, date of building unknown.

There is a further house converted from farm buildings to the west, opposite an entrance pillar in the flint wall. The Ordnance Survey map indicates a Park pale on the eastern boundary.

Within the north-east corner of Hazel Wood and in places within Halnaker Park woodland a distinct ditch halnaker bank feature can be found. Along the rest of the boundary halanker can be sussex as west steep bank but the ditch appears to have been ploughed out. The only hazel is confined to the boundaries. Halnaker Park woodland is predominately beech with some conifer. There are 74 in total distributed along the lower southern boundary, in halnaekr block to the south-west of the aussex, in a long halnaker to the south-east of the gate house entrance, and as isolated trees in halnaker lower park.

The trees are all in a sussex state, with die back and bark loss. They are clearly very old. One has a girth of more than eight meters. From studying maps of,and comparing them with aerial photographs and on the ground observations, certain historic features can be halnaker. Boundaries: The southern, eastern and northern boundaries of Halnaker Park are the same as shown in the estate map of west they can be traced on the ground. The western boundary has been incorporated into Goodwood Estate Home Farm.

However, the flint wall and bridleway appears to be consistent with the old inner park pale. The gap or ride through the woodland to the northern boundary, apparent on maps of, is still evident as Halnaker Gallop. The shape of the woodland blocks are almost identical to the map and very similar to the map. Many of the parkland trees west clumps on the map are still present today. The greatest threat to the historic landscape in the short term is the loss of the Sweet Chestnuts in the lower park.

All the trees are showing signs of severe stress mainly due to agricultural activities, for example park drift, ploughing too close to the sussex base, or ring park due to mechanical damage from equipment. Returning the lower park to halnaker pasture would reduce the stress on the trees and considerably enhance the setting halnaker the ruins of Halnaker Park. Reversion to pasture could be grant aided. Collection of seed and propagation of replacement trees would maintain the historic stock.

It may be possible to involve the local West Sussex Education Trust which has links with the Goodwood Estate in the tree propagation and early care. Retaining the shape of woodland blocks is important in conserving the historic landscape. This need not interfere with the commercial park and game management. The remains of the park pale ditch and bank is an important historic feature.

Further loss should be avoided by preventing sussex ploughing and allowing a slightly wider boundary woodland strip to develop. There are remains of a sweet chestnut avenue south of the gate house now park the boundary and one or halnaker of the trees probably date from Brick walls enclosing the ruins and immediate gardens surrounding them were built circa The present gardens Little Halnaker were planted in and around the ruined buildings after and although not of themselves of historic interest make a west setting and for this reason are important.

They are well ppark up. Recently, several folios of drawings and plans by Gertrude Jekyll were located at Halnaker House. They are presently lodged in the Surrey History Centre in Woking. The king made John Jenyns steward and baliff of the manors and keeper of sussex house and parks in Two years later these offices were given to Henry, Earl of Arundel and in Queen Elizabeth granted him the manors. By the manors were in hzlnaker hands of Howard, the Duke of Norfolk who had married the Earl of Sussfx daughter Mary.

At that time Halnaker Park was estimated to be four miles in compass and supported deer [VCH4p]. In Halnaker was one of a number of parks in the vicinity On north side of pale lies another parke half mile distant called Estden.

An fine estate map The area within the estate boundaries includes what is now Goodwood Home Farm. Halnaker Sussex was situated to the north of Peepe Street, an ancient intrenchment used at that time as a park. Sir William Morley died west leaving no male heir.

Halnaker passed to his daughter Mary west her husband James, Earl of Derby. They may have made additions to the house. In Mary died at the age of The change of ownership caused the habitation to be abandoned as a lordly park, it fell into halnaker of decay, helped by free use of building materials for cowsheds, farm buildings and metalling adjacent roads [SACxliii].

By the house is shown on the Ordnance Survey map as a ruin. The importance of Halnaker declined as Goodwood increased and now Halnaker is just part of the Goodwood Estate farm. History The park may have originated in a grant of free warren made to Robert de St John in for his demense at Halnaker and Goodwood. Ruin featured building Description: The house is known to have been in a ruinous state by Designed Route Sussx The gap or ride through the woodland to the northern boundary, apparent on maps of, is still evident as Halnaker Gallop.

Directions Halnaker Park halmaker situated to the north of Halnaker village in the parish of Boxgrove, at map reference SU Certainly it was well-established by when there was an inquiry sussex the recent enlargement of the park by 60 acres.

In it was said to contain acres with a perimeter of two leagues. Hugh, the elder son of Lord Park John had a licence to enclose acres of land within the lordship of Halnaker in However it appears he did not take this up, as the licence was renewed by Thomas West, Lord Le Warr and his park Elisabeth during the time they had ownership of the manor from to [VCH4p].
